on friday, heather made dinner and we played '90s trivial pursuit which we are all too young for. matt and i made two loaves of vegan banana bread with browning bananas from the food bank. they turned out really well and our loaf is all but gone. then we had a rousing discussion about the value of human and/vs animal lives. matt saw a mouse in his room and wants to kill it with a mousetrap that says "goody" on it and belongs to alex morris but got into my stuff when i moved out of wicks. matt is worried that it might be carrying the bubonic plague. i say we leave him alone or maybe name him ralph. i'm not sure who won the argument. despite our sides of the argument about ralph's fate, you wouldn't expect either of our value of life opinions to be what they are.

John and I walked two miles to Reading Terminal Market on Saturday morning. It seemed a lot further but I just looked it up. The food there was surprisingly expensive. I got falafel from the Middle Eastern kiosk that was smaller than Maoz and cost almost twice as much but the guy there looked like Eugene Hutz and gave me free Dr. Pepper. The vegetarian food vendor with carrot tuna and other fake meats was closed for some reason. I bought some produce for cheap though, orange tomatoes and sprouts and two mangoes. I am holding out on a lot of food purchasing until my Access card (food stamps) comes through.
the deal with food stamps is this: My position is through AmeriCorps which is through the Corporation for National and Community Service. It is a government position; my small checks come from the Department of Treasury. AmeriCorps encourages us to apply for food stamps because the low living stipend makes us eligible. In that sense, our wages are $100 more a month than is advertised. The money just comes from a different part of the government (the USDA) and must be used on food.
